Cardiff 2 – Southampton 1 (Championship, August 9, 2008) Steve Thompson fired Cardiff into the lead, but David McGoldrick levelled just minutes later. Roger Johnson scored a controversial last-gasp winner to leave the home fans happy.

Ipswich 1 – Preston 2 (Championship, August 9, 2008) Ipswich started brightly, Kevin Lisbie beat Sean St Ledger in the air and nodded home a Danny Haynes cross within the first two minutes of the game. Preston draw level when Paul McKenna smacked home a beauty past Richard Wright into the top right hand corner. Simon Whaley netted the winner after a quick free-kick.

Coventry 2 – Norwich 0 (Championship, August 9, 2008)

Plymouth 2 – Wolves 2 (Championship, August 9, 2008) Plymouth were ahead on seven minutes with a goal from Rory Fallon, with a Michael Kightly volley levelling it for Wolves on 19 minutes. The home team were ahead again when Marcel Seip scored after 55 minutes but Vokes helped Wolves claim a point with his equaliser on 78 minutes.
