Champions League qualifiers

Dynamo Kiev 2 – Drogheda United 2 (Agg. 4-3) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Dynamo took a 13th minute lead when Aliyev fired a shot through the keeper from the edge of the box. But the Irishmen went into the break level as Shaun Robinson made no mistake with his spot kick. Milevsky seemed to put the tie to bed when he put Kiev back in front with under 20 minutes remaining. A late goal from Graham Gartland set up a grandstand finish, but the hosts held on to progress.

BATE Borisov 2 – Anderlecht 2 (Agg. 4-3) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) The hosts took the lead through Bliznyuk, before Biglia squared matters with a penalty. After the Belgian side had Rnic sent off, BATE killed the match when Rodionov scored in the 83rd minute, but there was still time for Polak to get a consolation, but ultimately Anderlecht were dumped out of Europe.

Basel 4 – IFK Gothenburg 2 (Agg. 5-3) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) IFK Gothenburg took the lead away at Basel when Wernbloom broke the offside trap and finished smartly into the far corner. Basel equalised through Huggel’s looping header from a corner in the 25th minute. IFK made the crucial breakthrough in the 51st minute, Basel losing possession too easily in midfield, and when the ball arrived to Soder he scored at the second attempt. Basel levelled when Scott Chipperfield tucked home a back post cross after IFK had been exposed down the left flank. In the final stages Ergic put the hosts ahead on the night with a penalty, before he added a well taken second at the death.

MTK Budapest 0 – Fenerbahce 5 (Agg. 0-7) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Fenerbahce moved ahead when Turkish international Semih swept the ball home from in the six yard box. Semih added a speculator second, chipping a stunning lob over the keeper after Fener had put together over 20 passes in the build up. Emre added the third from the spot, before Semih stole the show with his third and fourth goals of the night.

Wisla Krakow 5 – Beitar Jerusalem 0 (Agg. 6-2) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Wisla overcame a first leg deficit to crush the Israelis and set up a glamour tie against Barcelona. Cantoro, Cleber (penalty) and Brozek all scored in the opening forty-five. The Poles strode to victory with two more second half goals with Diaz’s volley and Niedzielan’s rebound.

Dinamo Zagreb 3 – Domzale 2 (Agg. 6-2) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008)

Rapid Vienna 3 – Anorthosis 1 (Agg. 3-4) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Vincent Laban gave Anorthosis a 4-0 aggregate lead before one goal from Erwin Hoffer and a Stefan Maierhofer brace had them on the back foot in the closing stages.

Partizan Belgrade 2 – Inter Baku 0 (Agg. 3-1) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008)

Sparta Prague 2 – Sheriff Tiraspol 0 (Agg. 3-0) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008)
