Basel equalised through Huggel’s looping header from a corner in the 25th minute. IFK made the crucial breakthrough in the 51st minute, Basel losing possession too easily in midfield, and when the ball arrived to Soder he scored at the second attempt. Basel levelled when Scott Chipperfield tucked home a back post cross after IFK had been exposed down the left flank. In the final stages Ergic put the hosts ahead on the night with a penalty, before he added a well taken second at the death.
MTK Budapest 0 – Fenerbahce 5 (Agg. 0-7) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Fenerbahce moved ahead when Turkish international Semih swept the ball home from in the six yard box. Semih added a speculator second, chipping a stunning lob over the keeper after Fener had put together over 20 passes in the build up. Emre added the third from the spot, before Semih stole the show with his third and fourth goals of the night.
Wisla Krakow 5 – Beitar Jerusalem 0 (Agg. 6-2) (Champions League qualifier, August 6, 2008) Wisla overcame a first leg deficit to crush the Israelis and set up a glamour tie against Barcelona. Cantoro, Cleber (penalty) and Brozek all scored in the opening forty-five. The Poles strode to victory with two more second half goals with Diaz’s volley and Niedzielan’s rebound.
