Musician and well known rock activist Billy Bragg has joined the ongoing furore against new Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio.
Whilst many have wondered where the criticism of Di Canio was when he was considered a “maverick” during his time as coach of Swindon, the outrage at a known Fascist taking over one of the biggest clubs in England has to be welcomed.
Di Canio’s statement on Wednesday could well bring an end to this episode, but many wondered about the choice of words used by the new Sunderland boss.
The former Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham striker said: “I am not political, I do not affiliate myself to any organisation. I am not a racist and I do not support the ideology of fascism.”
Musician Billy Bragg sent his message just an hour ago to Di Canio during a sound check at the Neptune Theater, Seattle.
This song was originally sung by Woody Guthrie in 1942.
