Peterborough v Tottenham, pre-season friendly, July 21, 2009
So far pre-season has been good for Spurs. Two matches against Exeter and Bournemouth have seen two wins, six goals scored in total while the Lillywhites’ backline have kept back-to-back clean sheets.
In both warm-up games Harry Redknapp has liberally used his substitutions, and the same is expected at London Road on Tuesday night. That should afford Spurs the opportunity to give the majority of their first team more minutes ahead of the new campaign, with Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon, Luka Modric and Wilson Palacios all expected to play some part in the exhibition match.
Spurs may also be able to call on goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes for the first time this summer, the Brazilian custodian having just returned to White Hart Lane after representing his country at the Confederations Cup.
Posh’s last outing saw the Championship side lose 3-nil to Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa. But the North Londoners should not take that as a sign that the Posh will be pushovers.
Under the watchful eye of manager Darren Ferguson (pictured), son of Sir Alex, the Posh have impressively recorded successive promotions to reach England’s second division. And against Spurs they should be firing on all cylinders as they welcome back striker Aaron Mclean, winger Shaun Batt, midfielder Dean Keates and defender Gabriel Zakuani after they all missed the match with the Midlanders.
The Posh support seems to have taken the Tottenham game to heart, with over 5000 tickets having already been sold. That should provide an electric atmosphere as Spurs may be about to stutter for the first time in their pre-season.
