Kettering Town are a club in crisis both on and off the pitch.
The Poppies, who stare relegation full in the face sitting second bottom in the Conference, have spent much of the past 12 months in financial turmoil going from one winding up petition to another with barely a moment’s pause.
Kettering’s next court is on Monday where the club again need to stump up enough cash to keep the tax man at bay. But happily on this occasion they’ve been helped out by Betfair, as the gambling goliath have agreed a one-off sponsorship deal for this weekend’s match with Stockport in the hope of boosting the club’s coffers.
Betfair, however, aren’t helping out Kettering just for the fun of it. The PR stunt is an obvious attempt for the company to raise it’s profile, and this is illustrated in a new jokey advert released by Betfair on Thursday.
Looking to latch onto Kettering’s history as the first British team to carry a sponsor’s name on their shirts, Betfair are dredging up the spirit of the 1970s. That means the Poppies will play Stockport in a special strip based entirely on their 1976 kit, including the visually iconic short shorts.
