Benni McCarthy 120226 Celebrates G 300 Benni McCarthy scores brilliant overhead kick winner for Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg UnitedFormer Porto, West Ham and Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy showed he has still got it with a cracking winner for Orlando Pirates in their PSL match with Maritzburg United on Sunday.

The Orlando Pirates were indebted to McCarthy who notched in the 75th minute with a stunning overhead kick to ensure they picked up all three points and stay in touch with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

McCarthy had only been introduced four minutes before scoring the overhead kick, despite notching in his previous game and four goals in 12 appearances this season in total.

Looking a lot more streamline than he did at West Ham (described by Karren Brady as a “scales buster”) McCarthy acrobatically steered a free-kick into the bottom corner, in off the post.

After the game, McCarthy dedicated the goal to Nelson Mandela and joked about scoring spectacular goals: “I send my regards to my granddad Madiba – that was my inspiration. I promised I would score for the ex-president – that goal I dedicate specially for him… It’s something I’ve been very good at – something I used to do a lot at Celta Vigo and at Ajax Amsterdam. But as I got older, I didn’t wanna make a fool of myself.”
