Back in August, the pre-season friendly schedule was shaken up when a referee was knocked out in a friendly.
German outfit Dusseldorf were hosting Benfica, when the match was abandoned in the first half after the referee Christian Fisher was KO’ed by visiting defender Luisao.
Like a mentalist, Luisao barged over the referee with two arms, and the official was dramatically poleaxed.
A month on, and judgement has been passed on Luisao for his bad behaviour. The sentence was substantial, as the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) served the Benfica centre-half for two months as well as a 2,550-euro fine.
The FPF said it would inform FIFA of its decision, making it likely that Luisao’s suspension could be applied in the Champions League as well as Portuguese competition.
If that happened, the 31-year-old would miss Benfica’s first four games of the Champions League group phase. The team are drawn with Barcelona, Celtic and Spartak Moscow.
Relive Luisao’s crazy assault of ref Fisher below.
