Thursday night’s Europa League match between Athletic Bilbao-Anderlecht was marred as hundreds of rivals supporters spilled out onto the field after the full-time whistle was blown to engage in fisty-cuffs.
According to reports, four Belgians and a Spaniard were detained following the clashes in which certain hooligans were spotted wielding sticks. And the clubs themselves are now waiting to see whether they’ll face heavy sanctions from UEFA due to their responsibility in the crowd trouble.
The incident was further inflamed by the comments of Bilbao president Fernando Garcia Macua, who pointed a large slice of the blame on “drunk” Belgian fans.
Macau: “Anderlecht supporters, you saw them out in the city today drinking a lot and they don’t know how to control themselves. We all came here – almost all of us at least – to see a sporting spectacle. It’s unfortunate.”
