Aston Villa keep Spurs rock-bottom of the Premier League

Tottenham 1 – Aston Villa 2 (Premier League, September 15, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Nigel Reo-Coker put Villa into the lead in the fifth minute at White Hart Lane, finishing at the back post after Spurs failed to clear a low left wing cross from Agbonlahor. After the break Villa doubled their advantage, Barry threaded a simple ball through to Ashley Young, who brought the ball forward before letting fly from 25 yards and seeing his shot slip through Gomes, leaving the keeper with egg on his face, after he had made some important saves in the first-half. Three minute from time Spurs pulled a goal back when Jenas’ shot was diverted goalwards by Darren Bent.

Drogheda 1 – Cork City 1 (Setanta Cup, September 15, 2008) The Leesiders went in front on 44 minutes with a fine goal from Darren Murphy, but were pegged back on 50 minutes when John Tambouras slid in to score for Drogheda.

Cukaricki Belgrade 2 – Red Star Belgrade 2 (Serbian Super Liga, September 14, 2008) Played in what looked like a parking lot, the game was held up by fire-crackers and a dog on the pitch, as former European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade’s poor start in the Serbian first division continued. Red Star were in trouble after Vilotic fired Cukaricki into a 65th-minute lead. They turned the match with goals from Edgar da Silva and a Milijas penalty but Popovic’s late equaliser (shocking goalkeeping) kept Red Star second-bottom.
