For many it was the moment that summed up Arsenal’s season and it will be strange to see Arsene Wenger on the bench without his trusted lieutenant Pat Rice in 2012/2013.
In injury-time at the Hawthorns on Sunday, Robin van Persie went through on goal down the inside left channel but blazed over – cue Arsene Wenger burying his head in Pat Rice’s stomach.
The touching scene has had a ton of Gooners wondering whether Steve Bould will be able to fill in for Rice in a similar emotional way when he takes over as Wenger’s number 2.
Seconds later, substitute Kieran Gibbs was well placed to make a timely block on a West Brom effort on goal.
The interception from the Arsenal left back has been hailed in some quarters as being worth £50m as it sealed 3rd position in the Premier League.
Since it was Pat Rice’s last game with Arsenal, after 44 years of service, he was treated to being thrown in the air by the delirious players.
