The 2013-14 Premier League is less than one day old and Arsene Wenger is already under pressure.
Losing 3-1 at home to Aston Villa was a terrible way to start the new campaign, but perhaps far more damaging could be the injuries collected in the first round of the new season.
According to The Professor, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain (cruciate ligaments, possibly out for three months) and Santi Cazorla all picked up knocks against Villa and are no major doubts for Wednesday night’s Champions League match at Fenerbahce.
Arsenal’s injury woes are now significant.
In defence Kieran Gibbs picked up a head injury on Saturday which forced the left-back off before the break, while Thomas Vermaelen and Nacho Monreal are both injured, leaving Wenger with just four recognisable defenders for the match in Turkey in four days time.
Wenger’s salection headache at the back however looks bleak ahead of the Fulham match next weekend, as French centre-back Laurent Koscielny will be unavailable for selection after his red card against Villa.
Up front, Arsenal’s new signing Yaya Sanogo is also out with injury.
Arsenal’s potential squad for next week’s match at Fulham: Szczęsny, Fabiański, Sagna, Mertesacker, Rosicky, Podolski, Giroud, Walcott, Ramsey, Jenkinson, Bendtner, Park & Miyaichi.
