Arsenal have one foot and a few toes in the Champions League after their comprehensive 3-0 win away in Turkey in their 1st leg qualifier against Fenerbahce on Wednesday night.
Yet with the luck they’re having with injuries, they almost inevitably suffered another blow: Laurent Koscielny, their last remaining fully fit central defender, was forced off and taken to hospital with an opened skull after taking a wild and reckless boot to the face from Pierre Webo, who could surely have pulled out.
Koscielny stayed on at first after initially receiving treatment, but was then replaced by right back Carl Jenkinson; at which point the only remaining defender on the bench was full back Bacary Sagna.
Koscielny was suspended anyway so it may seem a moot point, but the fact is were he not, Arsenal are now down to Per Mertesacker as their only fit central defender for the time being.
So, it looks like Wenger will be forced to construct a patchwork defence for this weekend’s Premier League game against Fulham.
