Some doubts were raised as to Chelsea’s wisdom in keeping faith in Petr Cech this season ahead of the emerging Thibault Courtois, but last Cech dispelled any fears that he may be approaching decline with a simply awesome performance in Chelsea’s Super Cup defeat to Bayern.
Quite simply, that the game had to be decided on penalties was largely thanks to / because of the helmet-wearing Czech keeper, who pulled off a number of spectacular saves (Bayern had 37 shots on goal in total), notably in extra-time when Chelsea were down to 10 men and with Bayern throwing everything at them in search of an equaliser.
Until the last minute of extra-time when Javi Martinez finally breached Cech, it looked like Cech was going to single-handedly carry Chelsea to victory by hook or by crook.
