It’s supposed to be a device to help take armchair football fans closer to the action, but sometimes SpiderCam can affect proceedings in unintended ways too.
Tuesday’s Asian Champions League match between Iranian outfit Esteghlal and Emirati club Al Jazira witnessed a strange occurrence as keeper Ali Khaseif twice hit the swinging camera in the space of just thirty seconds. On each occasion the camera was hit whilst Khaseif was standing over 40-yards away from the target.
Applying the laws of the game, after the SpiderCam was whacked the referee halted play and restarted it with a drop-ball. Esteghlal kindly returned to their UAE visitors in both instances.
