Reports in Holland this morning claim Amsterdam giants Ajax are interested in signing FC Volendam goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven. Martin Jol is said to be eying up the 29-year-old keeper, who played 34 times for Volendam last season before the club were eventually relegated to the Dutch second division.
It should be noted that if he does move to Ajax, Verhoeven will likely be back-up to Maarten Stekelenburg and Kenneth Vermeer as the third choice keeper at the club.
So why should you care about this potential transfer?
This story is of interest though because of the well-documented abuse which Jeroen Verhoeven received on his last visit to the Ajax ArenA back in February 2009.
Verhoeven has always been one of the chunkier professional footballers, and in the cruel world of football such weight issues have always provided easy cannon-fodder for opposition fans. And so it proved on his last trip to the capital, as the keeper had to endure the constant crowing of the crowd, who roared “Oooh… PIZZA!” every time Verhoeven kicked the ball.
Video footage of the Ajax fans mocking Jeroen “Oooh PIZZA!” Verhoeven can be seen here.
