657 AIKs English legend Kenny Pavey stars in a brilliant Ladbrokes ad on his love for MillwallEnglish players playing abroad still feels like a rare thing.

On his transfer from Liverpool to Juventus, Ian Rush famously commented ”moving from Wales to Italy is like moving to a different country.” It still seems very foreign to the English to play off the island, with most only likely to name David Beckham and Joe Cole as Englishmen working abroad.

Yet there are plenty more Englishman earning Euros and Dollars, and criminally overlooked in that mix is Swedish based, AIK Stockholm cult hero, Kenny Pavey.

After tasting homegrown football with Millwall and Sittingbourne, Pavey moved to Swedish second division side Ljungskile SK in 1998 before a transfer to AIK seven years later. Pavey has since become loved on the AIK terraces thanks to his English playing style – he’s previously been voted the dirtiest footballer in the Allsvenskan – and his role in the league and cup double in 2009.

Most heroically, in the penultimate match of the 2009 in an away derby at fierce rivals Hammarby that AIK had to win to keep their title dream alive, Pavey came off the bench in the 68th minute and promptly scored the winner two minutes later. He celebrated by scaling the wall separating the fans and the players, cutting his both hands to shreds on the barbed wire at the top. And he wasn’t even booked. (Watch that clip here.)

With his reputation established, betting big-boy Ladbrokes have released a new video for the Swedish market which follows Pavey on his one holiday a year; back to England in the grey winter so that he can go see hs beloved side Millwall.

The video captures Pavey in a muddy park with his mates and his family members, and records some endearing images from one of English football’s hidden gems.
