Controversy reigned on Sunday in the Thai first division as a legal goal was chalked off because the officials simply missed it.
BEC Tero Sasana, third in the league, lost 2-1 away at Chainat, but the scoreline would have been different had Jose Franco’s 100% legal goal stood.
Franco, a Spaniard playing far from home, planted home a header into the far top corner following a pacey, left-footed inswinging corner. Amazingly, though, the referee failed to award the goal as, playing in Subbuteo-esque goal-nets, the ball smacked a metal bar just inside the apex of the bar and post, and popped out.
It was all too quick for the referee’s human eye to take.
