To coin a stereotypical Italian phrase, Mamma Mia!
Monday night in Italy’s Serie B, the match between Torino and Ancona climaxed with an incredible final few minutes as firstly the visitors broke the deadlock with an incredible Pasquale Schiattarella goal in the 89th minute, only for Torino to salvage a point with the very last touch of the ball.
But first things first – Schiattarella’s strike for Ancona was simply breathtaking. Reminiscent of Fabio Quagliarella’s unforgettable 45-yard lob for Sampdoria against Chievo several seasons back (watch here), Schiattarella produced almost a carbon copy moment with a world-class lob from just inside his opponents half.
Poor Matteo Sereni, formerly of Ipswich Town, had no chance in the Torino goal. Having cleared his lines by smacking the ball upfield when under pressure, Sereni’s hoofed clearance fell straight to Schiattarella just left of the centre circle. Then, after initially controlling with his chest, the midfielder audaciously went for goal with his second touch, seeing his shot sail directly into the net with the home keeper caught scrambling.

Amazingly though the goal didn’t phase the hosts, who came back to level in the final minute of the match.
