Qatari club Al Gharafa hit the headlines last summer by paying mega-money to lure Brazilian schemer Juninho Pernambucano to the Middle East, and so far their investment appears to be paying off.
Sitting second in Star League having won five and drawn two of their opening seven matches of the season, Al Gharafa looked well poised to duke it out with league leaders Al Sadd for the title. And Al Gharafa could make it a domestic double by winning the Qatar Stars Cup too, after dishing out a 5-1 beating to Al Khor on Tuesday night.
The first goal of the game was a stunner.
With 17 minutes on the clock the hosts won a corner which was taken by set-piece specialist Juninho. Al Khor appeared to have defended the out-swinger relatively well at first instance, with the visitors managing to head the ball clear of the danger area. However the clearing header only found its way to Moroccan midfielder Othman Al Asas 25-yards from goal and, without a second’s thought, the number 20 smacked the ball on the volley.
The Al Khor goalie had no chance.
