A fabulous goal for you to enjoy from last week’s League Two encounter between Grimsby and Morecambe.
Two of the most unfashionable clubs in British football played out a humdinger last Tuesday night, as the Shrimps battled back from two goals down the win the match 3-2 in injury time. And not only was there the grandstand finish, but Gary Hunter’s winner was a strike worthy of settling any match.
Having won an injury time corner, Morecambe’s dead-ball specialist Michael Twiss opted to pick out the unmarked Hunter on the edge of the box rather than sling a hopeful ball into the mixer.
Delivering a low, flat, left-footed corner, the airborne delivery travelled perfectly to the intended target, allowing Hunter the opportunity to hit the ball sweetly on the volley. But the number eight’s effort surpassed all reasonable expectations, as Hunter cracked a stunning volley from right to left that arched beautifully past Barnes’ outstretched hand into the top corner.
Paul Scholes would be proud.
