Dries Mertens is loving life at the present. Just last week the 21-year-old Belgian forward agreed to move from his current second division Dutch side AGOVV Apeldoorn to Eredivisie outfit Utrecht, and last night Mertens capped the good news with a stunning strike for his soon-to-be former employers.
We pick up the action in the 70th minute, the sides locked in a 1-all tussle as the game enters the final stages. With both sides frantically try to prise open the other, a period of scrappy play began to unfold in the centre of the park as neither could find the composure to create a meaningful opening.
Eventually, after several back and forths, the ball dropped to Mertens the centre-circle just inside his opponents half. The result was spectacular.
Mertens coolly chested the ball down and, with the ball sitting invitingly on the half-volley, the striker fired off a missile from over 40-yards out that tore into the net. The keeper’s flying one-handed save attempt looked good for the cameras but the shot-stopper was beaten all-ends-up.
Dries Mertens’ brilliant goal from distance can be seen here.
