Sunday night in Brazil saw Palmeiras play host to Atletico Mineiro, and those lucky enough to be in attendance witnessed one of the undoubted goals of the season as home striker Diego Souza scored an incredible first-time volley from the halfway-line.
At the time of the goal, which arrived in the 16th minute, the sides were already locked in battle at 1-apiece. Palmeiras, looking to reassert their authority, then had the opportunity to retake the lead when a stray pass from the visitors allowed Vagner Love to gallop through on goal, only for Atletico Mineiro keeper Fabian Carini to come racing out his goal to make a sliding tackle to clear the immediate danger.
Cue a moment of pure genius.
Sadly for Carini, who by this point was over 25-yards out of his goal, his clearance fell straight to Diego Souza in the centre-circle and, without a moment’s pause, the Palmeiras number 9 wellied the ball back towards to visitor’s goal.
What happened next was just breathtaking.
