One of the hardest things in football is to connect cleanly with a ball that drops over your shoulder. You need perfect timing and superb technique and happily both qualities were on full display from RKC Waalwijk’s centre-forward Anton Jongsma on Friday night.
Playing against FC Zwolle in the Holland’s second division, Jongsma scored a stunning 13th minute volley that was worthy of winning any football match.
Picking up the ball in the right-back position, Dustley Mulder spotted the run of Jongsma in between two Zwolle defenders before launching a long punt forward looking to feed his striker’s run. The pass was inch-perfect cutting both defenders out of the picture, but Jongsma still had plenty to do as he looked to control the descending ball while never breaking stride.
The result was exquisite.
With his eyes fixed on the ball, and seemingly with a sixth sense of where the Zwolle keeper was standing, Jongsma flung himself at the ball as it dropped over his right shoulder, volleying the ball with his body one-hundred per cent airborne, and managing to lob the keeper on the angle. Perfection!
