38 or 39, Cristiano Ronaldo has been phenomenal again this season (individual video v Villarreal)
“I am very happy about equaling Zarra and Hugo Sanchez’s record. The truth is I didn’t expect to score so many goals this year and I feel honored to reach two legends like Zarra and Hugo Sanchez. What really matters is that we earned a great victory at a complicated venue. All of us, coach and players alike, want to have a good end to the season, and we’re accomplishing this so far. I would like to score even more goals against Almeria, but I’m not obsessed about it. I’ve tried to score from set pieces many times this year, but had been unlucky until now.” – Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to bang in the goals and his fantastic brace of free-kicks at Villarreal on Sunday night means he has officially now notched 38 La Liga goals in a season, equalling the record set by Hugo Sanchez (1989/90) and Telmo Zarra (1950/51).
With one game left of the campaign, Ronaldo has a home match against Almeria to ensure he secures the record outright despite the fact some media outlets (namely Marca) believe he has reached 39 already.
The debate between 38 and 39 is due to a free-kick taken by Cristiano Ronaldo in September that won the La Liga match at Real Sociedad. It took a heavy deflection off Pepe and secured a 2-1 win, officially it has been credited to Pepe and seemingly only Marca credit it to CR7. Video here.
Even without that goal at Sociedad, Ronaldo has still had a phenomenal season in front of goal. It is now 51 goals in all competitions in 2010/2011 and 64 goals in 62 La Liga appearances since joining Real Madrid from Manchester United.
