French football is not immune to football related violence, yet even by Gallic standards the incident which broke out at full-time of Monaco’s 3-2 victory over Nice on Saturday were extreme.
Around two hundred supporters of Ligue 1 strugglers Nice clashed with police after the whistle had been blown, with the visiting fans storming the pitch en masse as they tried to confront rival fans from The Principality. Nice’s defeat in the Riviera derby left them fifth from bottom, just six points above the relegation places.
The pitch invasion appeared to be carefully organised, with hundreds of fans bursting onto the pitch at the same time before individual battles starting popping up around
After the match, Nice president Gilbert Stellardo disowned his own supporters for their violent behaviour, going as far as to say “I dream of having supporters like they have in England. I would prefer to have supporters who have other qualities than those that ours possess.â€
