101 Predicts

England’s attempts at picking themselves off the mat following their embarrassing failure to impress at the World Cup begins at Wembley on Wednesday night against Norway.

Following their terrible performances in Brazil, where the Three Lions exited the competition in the group stages without a win, Roy Hodgson has received international retirement requests from a slew of the old guard, meaning that Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry are just some of the players now outside the England setup.

In fairness to Hodgson, the national manager did pick youngsters for Brazil in an attempt to freshen up the side, and that policy of picking youth should continue against the Scandinavians.

Daniel Sturridge should be joined by Liverpool colleagues Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson in the England XI, while Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should also feature.

Elsewhere, Everton youngster John Stones may get the nod at centre-back, while Jack Colback, Fabian Delph and Danny Rose should get their first run outs for the national team off the subs bench.

As for the visitors at Wembley, the biggest interest centres on the possible inclusion of 15-year-old Martin Odegaard in midfield. Were he to play, the Godset starlet would break the Norwegian international football record for the youngest debutant in his country’s history.
