Arsenal v Manchester City: Community Shield Betting tips, predicted line-ups & essential facts
Arsenal: Szczęsny, Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rosicky, Cazorla & Sanogo.
The three German World Cup winners, Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski, do not return to Arsenal training until Monday. Thomas Vermaelen is not available with a transfer away from the club imminent. The likes of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud are not fit. Joel Campbell and Jack Wilshere are pushing for a start in the first team.
Manchester City: Hart, Clichy, Kolarov, Boyata, Rekik, Fernando, Yaya Toure, Navas, Nasri, Dzeko & Jovetic.
Manchester City’s defence is a long way from being full strength with Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis all just having returned from World Cup duty. In midfield David Silva has barely featured in pre-season so far for the same reason. Up front Alvaro Negredo is injured and Sergio Aguero still recovering from the World Cup and various ailments suffered over the course of an injury-hit season. James Milner and Silva will be pushing for a place in the starting XI. Frank Lampard only trained with his new team mates at the end of the week and is not expected to be involved.
Arsenal v Manchester City, 101GG preview
The official curtain raiser of the English season begins on Sunday at 15:00 at Wembley in what is expected to be a full house.
Premier League champions Manchester City take on FA Cup holders Arsenal and it should be a cracker of a match with plenty of attacking talent available to both sides even without some star names.
For Arsenal its a chance to bag some more silverware after securing the FA Cup with victory over Hull last May.
It has been a mixed affair for the Gunners in pre-season as evidenced at the Emirates Cup where they smashed Benfica 5-1 but lost to Monaco the next day 1-0.
Exciting young attacking talents Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell will be keen to prove themselves and there is a steady spine of players that should see Arsenal compete well with City, including Koscielny, Ramsey, Cazorla and Rosicky.
Despite losing their past two matches in pre-season on penalties (to Liverpool and Olympiakos), Manchester City have once again illustrated the strength of their squad in recent weeks.
Stevan Jovetic has been a striker on fire and he will be eager to secure a first team spot for the opener against Newcastle next weekend.
Despite the availability of Micah Richards, Manuel Pellegrini has usually gone with playing Clichy on the right hand side, with Zabaleta and Sagna unavailable.
The strength (Fernando and Toure) and guile (Navas and Nasri) of Manchester City’s midfield will likely see them claim victory at Wembley. But it will be a close attacking game of football that should whet the appetite for the season ahead.
101GG predicts: Arsenal 2 – Manchester City 3.
