After a goalless first half, Spurs took the lead when Richard Kingson fouled Fraizer Campbell in the box and Roman Pavlyuchenko slotted home the spot-kick. The Lilywhites double their advantage when Jamie O’Hara’s sweet left-footed shot rebounded off the post and Luka Modric, prostrate on the floor, was perfectly placed to head in the rebound. Henri Camara scored a late consolation for the Latics but a free-flowing Spurs counter-attack ended with Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring a third and confirming Spurs progress to the fourth round.

Sainte-Genevieve 0 - Lille 3 (Coupe De France, January 2, 2009) After Heritier Lunda saw red for Sainte-Genevieve for a professional foul, Mathieu Debuchy headed the Ligue 1 side ahead on the stroke of halftime. A second half own goal from El-Othmani and a last-gasp header from Robert Vittek sealed Lille’s safe passage through to the next round.

Melbourne Victory 2 - Queensland Roar 1 (A-League, January 2, 2009) All the goals came in the second half, with Danny Allsopp scoring for Melbourne in the 55th minute and Rodrigo Vargas making it 2-nil in 67th minute. The Roar replied through skipper Craig Moore but but failed to find an equaliser.
