Another week, another brawl as Corinthians square-off against Avai

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

All hell broke loose in Saturday’s second division Brazilian match between promoted Corinthians and their opponents Avai, as a mass brawl involving all the players and the benches of both sides unfolded on the hour mark of the match.

The catalyst was a high challenge on Corinthians’ number 7 Elias by Batista of Avai. Strangely, the referee failed to blow his whistle against Batista’s raised foot, leaving Elias to take matters into his own hands by angrily confronting his offender. Cue disorder, during which time Corinthians’ number 9 Morais starting swinging punches at the opposition before a series of kicks and pushing between the sides began breaking out all over the pitch.

Quickly the officials restored order, and at the end of the melee Morais and Elias saw red for the hosts while Marquinhos and Batista were dismissed for the visitors.

See how the brawl unfolded here.
