Friday, August 29th, 2008

Blackburn 4 - Grimsby 1 (League Cup, August 27, 2008) A foul by debutant Carlos Villanueva allowed Mariners’ full back Tom Newey to step up and beat Blackburn’s deputy keeper James Brown. A 20-yard Villanueva curler levelled matters, before Matt Derbyshire gave Rovers the lead on 32 minutes. Derbyshire then turned provider for Brett Emerton for Blackburn’s third, before Derbyshire wrapped things up on 55 minutes.

Fulham 3 - Leicester 2 (League Cup, August 27, 2008) Zoltan Gera had given the home side a lead on the half-hour mark, Paul Dickov equalised a minute into the second half and Andy King put Nigel Pearson’s side ahead with a curler two minutes later. Jimmy Bullard struck an equaliser six minutes from time, before Danny Murphy claimed a last gasp winner.

West Ham 4 - Macclesfield 1 AET (League Cup, August 27, 2008)

Nottingham Forest 1 - Sunderland 2 AET (League Cup, August 27, 2008) Rob Earnshaw scored a fine free-kick on the hour mark to give Forest the lead. With four minutes remaining Phil Bardsley proved the most unlikely of heroes when he popped up in Forest’s box to convert El Hadji-Diouf’s cross-cum-shot from close range. David Healy found the winner in the first period of extra-time, when he snapped up the rebound after Grant Leadbitter’s shot was saved.

Huddersfield 1 - Sheffield United 2 (League Cup, August 27, 2008)
