Top five goals of the week

Fernando Torres (vs Marseilles, Dec. 11, 2007)

The importance of the occasion falls secondary to the beauty, control and composure the young Spaniard showed when scoring.

Alex De Souza (vs CSKA Moscow, Dec. 12, 2007)

De Souza has scored a number of wonderful goals in the Champions League this season, and the Fenerbache striker hit another a wondrous strike to pull his side back level in the final round of group matches.

Alex Del Piero (vs Lazio, Dec. 15, 2007)

Del Piero, the godfather of the Bianconeri, proved to all his doubters why he remains such a focal point for Juve by showing an expert first-touch, speed and then clinical finishing to kill off Lazio.

Sanli Tuncay (vs Derby, Dec. 15, 2007)

More often then not the scissor-volley results in a fat bloke behind the goal standing up with his arms wide apart. But when then go in they are special.

Roque Santa Cruz (at 6:38 minutes in) (vs Wigan, Dec. 8, 2007)

Santa Cruz stills looks like the bargain of the summer, holding all the qualities Chelsea wished Pizarro had, as the Paraguayan elegantly received the ball on his chest, swiveled and struck a rocket into the top corner, all in one movement.

Narrowly missing this week’s selection was Weldon Santos de Andrad’s winner for Belenenses over Benfica.

***

Last week’s entry failed to include a fantastic free-kick scored in the Spanish second division game between Almeria and Valladolid. Reminiscent of Matt Le Tisser, Almeria’s Corona lifted a free-kick off the floor into the immediate path of Negredo who smashed a volleyed past the keeper.
