To see how much Marcos Rojo’s stock has risen since last season, you only had to check Twitter after the Argentine defender was stretchered off during Manchester United’s Europa League tie with Anderlecht at Old Trafford.
Before Jose Mourinho arrived at the club, Rojo was waiting on the scrapheap.
A terrible second season under Louis van Gaal saw Rojo played out of position regularly. Restored to his favoured centre-half position by Mourinho, he’s shown his worth to fans who wanted to see the back of him.
In fact, he’s arguably been their best defender this season.
So, with a bunch of defenders already sidelined, how big a blow is losing Rojo?
Both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are out after being injured on England duty.
It could be the time for Timothy Fosu-Mensah to get a run of games under Mourinho. The big Dutch teenager was given his debut by Louis van Gaal last season and impressed but hasn’t featured much this term.

Never thought I’d see the day I’d be on the brink of tears watching Rojo leave the field on a stretcher

23′ – #MUFC are forced into an early change as Blind replaces Rojo, who leaves the field on a stretcher.
Get well soon, Marcos! #UEL

Bailly-Rojo was our best partnership, it’s clear that his injury has taken the stuffing out of us. Need to settle quickly.

That goal had been coming. The centre looking hollow, unsurprisingly – which says much for how well Rojo has developed.
