Friday night U21 goals: England edge Wales in five goal thriller

Wales U21 2 - England U21 3 (First-leg, Euro 2009 qualifier, October 10, 2008) Simon Church opened the scoring for Wales following a mix-up in the England backline, before England hit back with goals from David Wheater and Adam Johnson. But Church levelled before the break with an excellent finish before Gabi Agbonlahor cheekily flicked home England’s winner in the second half.

Germany U21 1 - France U21 1 (First-leg, Euro 2009 qualifier, October 10, 2008) Ashkan Dejagah put Ze Germans in front with a fine left-footed strike on 14 minutes but Portsmouth centre back Younes Kaboul levelled for Les Bleus, to put them slightly in the ascendancy going into the second leg.

Turkey U21 1 - Belarus U21 0 (First-leg, Euro 2009 qualifier, October 10, 2008) In-form Buraspor striker Sercan Yildrim scored the only goal in the tenth minute.

Austria U21 2 - Finland U21 1 (First-leg, Euro 2009 qualifier, October 10, 2008) The Austrians raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Christoph Saurer and Florian Klein inside 13 minutes, but Finland came back into the game midway through the second half through Mehmet Hetemaj.

Alhammadi equalised five minutes later with a low deflected shot from the top of the area that beat goalkeeper SeigoĀ Narazaki.

Deportivo Saprissa 2 - DC United 2 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 9, 2008) Doe opened the scoring for DC after six minutes, taking advantage of a defensive error by Robhinson. But the MLS side then fell twice apart at the back themselves, allowing Alpizar and Elizondo to put the hosts ahead in the final stages. But just as it seemed that United had thrown away the match they hit back in injury time, Dyachenko bundled home a 92nd minute equaliser from a corner.

Real Salt Lake 1 - New York Red Bulls 1 (MLS, October 9, 2008) David van den Bergh scored his seventh goal of the season just after the half hour mark to send the Red Bulls ahead, firing home from outside the box after a corner had only been partially cleared. But the Red Bulls, who haven’t won in three matches, failed to hold onto their lead, Jamison Olave converting from a corner just before half time. The game was marred in the final stages when Juan Pietravallo saw red for cutting open Clint Mathis with a high boot.

Rotherham batter Leeds; Roberto Baggio & Rudd Gullit turn out for a charity match

Rotherham 4 - Leeds 2 (Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, October 8, 2008) The Millers took the lead when a long throw by Nicholas picked out Sharps and his back header looped into the back of the net. Leeds equalised when Howson slotted home from close range, but three minutes after half time Hudson scored from a rebound after his penalty was initially saved. Then two goals in five minutes at the start of the second half stunned Leeds. Broughton headed home an inviting cross from Reid and five minutes later Fenton headed home Rhodes’ corner. Showunmi grabbed a consolation for Leeds.

Fiorentina 4 - AC Milan 1 (Exhibition, October 8, 2008) The match was played for former Stefano Borgonovo, to raise funds to help find a cure for the motor neurone disease, which Borgonovo currently suffers from. Roberto Baggio, who played with Borgonovo at Fiorentina, and Ruud Gullit, who played with Borgonovo at AC Milan, both turned out for the occasion. Fiorentina eventually ran out winners, with Giampaolo Pazzini grabbing a brace, as well as goals from Nappi and Da Costa. Massaro netted the only goal for the Rossoneri.

Gremio 2 - Santos 0 (Campeonato Brasileiro, October 8, 2008) Gremio regained the top spot in Brazil. Richard Morales opened the scoring in the second minute, and the hosts had to wait until injury time for the second, when Manchester United target Douglas Costa had a free-kick saved with Soares scoring from the rebound.

Municipal 2 - Tauro 2 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 8, 2008) Municipal opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Juan Plata volleyed home with his left foot. Tauro hit back in the second half, Luis Fernando Esobar finding the back of the net after a stunning solo effort in the 58th minute before Edwin Aguilar headed the Panama club into the lead. But Mario Acevedo headed home an injury time corner to grab a draw for Municipal.

Wednesday’s round-up

Stevenage 3 - Mansfield 2 (Conference, October 7, 2008) Boro went in front in the 45th minute after Chanot brought down Cole in the area and Morison scored the penalty. Mansfield levelled 11 minutes into the second half when Gavin Hurren’s long range shot found the bottom corner. The visitors then went in front three minutes later when O’Connor drove the ball home. But back came Boro, and Cole restored parity with a drilled shot that beat the Town keeper 25 minutes from time. Bostwick then netted the winner after Town keeper Paddy Gamble dropped the ball, with Mansfield’s Chanot sent off in the final stages.

Vitoria Setubal 0 - Maritimo 2 (Superliga, October 7, 2008) A nightmare pass from the Setubal keeper gifted the ball to Marcinho, who took his chance to score the opener. Manu exposed more poor defending to add a second in the final minute.

Houston Dynamo 2 - San Francisco 1 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 7, 2008) Chris Wondolowski headed Houston in lead after 13 minutes. Temistocles Perez equalised in the 47th minute with a fabulous 30-yard lob which sailed in over the head of Dynamo goalkeeper Tony Caig. Wondolowski hit the post as Houston searched for the winner, and the got it through a fine strike from distance from star Dwayne De Rosario two minutes from time.

Leixoes grab a late equaliser at home to Benfica & Besiktas see off Hacettepe

Oxford 2 - Rushden & Diamonds 1 (Conference, October 4, 2008) A goal in each half from Barry Quinn and Phil Trainer was enough for Oxford to claim the points, although they had a nervous finish after Daryl Clare fired home a sweet free-kick.

Leixoes 1 - Benfica 1 (SuperLiga, October 6, 2008) Benfica went to high flying Leixoes and they took a 33rd minute lead when Oscar Cardozo took advantage of a lack of concentration in the defence to fire home inside the near post. But Leixoes equalised in the final minutes, Wesley headed home a corner to earn a point.

Vitoria Guimaraes 0 - Braga 0 (SuperLiga, October 6, 2008)

Besiktas 2 - Hacettepe 1 (Super Lig, October 6, 2008) Karadeniz exposed some poor Hacettepe defendingĀ to give Besiktas the lead. Bekmezci levelled with a fabulous strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after a corner was only partially cleared. But Besiktas hit back after the break, Nobre heading home the winner.

Unirea 0 - Poli Iasi 1 (Liga I, October 6, 2008) Poli scored a fabulous goal on the counter-attack on the stroke of halftime, breaking from defence the ball finally fell at the feet of Bratu who fired home a shot into the far top corner.

Red Star Belgrade 0 - Partizan Belgrade 2 (Serbian Superliga, October 5, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Partizan Belgrade went 13 points clear of bitter city rivals Red Star after a fine away win. Lamine Diarra fired the champions ahead in the 56th minute and Antonello Juca sealed the win in the final minute after both sides had a player sent off after exchanging blows.
